Fiberglass (Gelcoat) Restoration
From $25 per foot*

The brutal Texas sun takes a toll on your boat resulting in a chalky, dull finish. Our gelcoat restorations start with our crook and crevice detailing service and ends with our extensive 5-step restoration process. We will renew your chalky dull finish back to a mirror-like shine. Basically, we're Botox for your boat.

A great deal of time and money goes into building a fiberglass boat, yet its perceived value, as with a car, is determined by its appearance. The difference between a car and a fiberglass boat or yacht, however, is that your boat's shiny outer surface is built-in during the molding process, not sprayed on afterwards, and cannot readily be replaced. By using Ship Shape Services' fiberglass (gelcoat) restoration service, you enhance your boat's appearance and maintain its long-term value. After a full deep cleaning service, the rejuvenated gelcoat of your yacht's fiberglass is sealed and protected to guard against further staining and to protect against ultraviolet light.

The quality and appearance of the outer skin of the fiberglass - the gelcoat - is your boat's greatest asset. However unlike an engine or mast, the precious gelcoat cannot be replaced. Excessive use of abrasive cleaners while cleaning fiberglass can often remove the gelcoat entirely or leave only a very thin film resulting in that 'patchy' or grey look so often seen in marinas. Even slightly cut-back boats frequently appear chalky and uncared for.

For oxidized boats, a gelcoat restoration may be necessary to restore the shine of the gel coat. A good test is to run your finger down one of the hull sides and/or other fiberglass surfaces. If there is chalkiness on your finger, then compounding will mostly likely be necessary to bring back the shine. If your finger has little to no chalk on it, then we can most likely bring the shine right back with our detail service. In either case, we'd suggest additional applications of wax, whether prior to launch or staggered throughout the season, to keep your boat's gelcoat protected and looking good. We'd will need to look at your boat to determine which service is needed.

Our gelcoat restoration starts with a crook and crevice detailed cleaning, followed by a complete compounding of the boat to remove the oxidation. The boat will then be cleaned again, and then compounded with gloss compound. It will be cleaned again and at that point, the fiberglass should be ready to receive a coat of marine grade wax.

Our gelcoat restoration also includes:

  • Crook and crevice detail service
  • Clean and protect all exposed upholstery
  • Clean and treat carpets
  • Polish all glass and apply a coat of protectant
  • Polish all hardware
  • Dress the rubrail
  • Launder any removable canvas and treat for water repellency
  • Clean trailer and dress tires (where applicable)

After this gelcoat restoration, if you keep your boat cleaned and waxed on a regular basis, you shouldn't have to do a process this extensive for many seasons. Gelcoat restoration can be done "in the slip" or if boat is located off-site, it can be trailered to our shop.

*Some prices may vary based on individual applications and boat location.
